We installed Serna-4.1 on openSUSE11.1 (with basic German language) and tried to type umlauts and ß in documents opened in Serna. It works OK (both lowercase and uppercase umlauts).

Please, provide us with some more details:
-do you mean Serna-4.1 or Serna-3.8.1?
-which type of the document (template) do you use?
-do umlauts work in other external application?
