Lightbulb Serna Free XML Editor Goes Open Source Soon! Help Us Build the Community! - 06-17-2009, 02:48 PM

We are happy to tell you that our Serna XML Editor is going to be open-source
software soon! Serna is a powerful and easy-to-use WYSIWYG XML editor based on
open standards, which works on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and Sun Solaris/SPARC.

We love Serna and wish to share our passion with anyone who wants to make
it better. Our mission is to make XML accessible to everyone, and we believe
that open-source Serna could enable much more users and companies to adopt
XML technology.

So, if you are passionate about contributing to open-source Serna XML Editor in some
way, here are our requests for you to help make the Open Source and XML world better:

- Discuss open-source Serna with the community! Please share your ideas concerning
technology, business or partnership at our forum:
http://forum.syntext.com/syntext-ser...ce-discussion/

- Donate to help Serna go free! Making Serna sources open requires quite an effort
and goes beyond our regular business. If you love Serna and enjoy using it, please
support us to make Serna free to the world and serve people better.
Please contribute at: http://www.syntext.com/donation/

- Spread the news! Please mention Serna goes open source in your blogs, Twitter, and
XML mailing lists. The free Serna code needs to find its hackers! We need to know
what they think and how they can participate.

We rely on you to help us improve Serna XML Editor and keep it free and running!

Jocrow,

Thanks for the appreciation of our efforts! Together we can do even much more!

Right now you can contribute sharing your experience and ideas on how to setup a comfortable environment for the community on which we are working now pretty hard.

You can also spread this news to your friends and colleques, which will be interested in this project so they can also bring their knowledge.

After the source code will be opened (a matter of weeks) you will be able to contribute with the source code, ideas, writing documentation, etc. There is always a lot of work could be done to make the project better.

Timofey.

Default Selecting an Open Source license - 06-17-2009, 05:50 PM

Hello,

I think it's great that this will be released as open source! Have you decided on a license to use? It would be great if you picked a license that allowed re-distribution from within any of the major Linux distributions. This would be of benefit to your software, too, as you would see much greater use of your software, and a much greater likelihood of community contributions to the project.

Here are some licenses that allow redistribution through the Fedora Project:
Licensing:Main - FedoraProject

Here are lists of licenses that are appropriate for inclusion in Debian:
Debian -- License information

Here's some plain-english info on licensed software in Ubuntu:
Licensing | Ubuntu

I hope this is helpful for you, and I hope that you select one of the licenses mentioned that allows for easier software redistribution. Thank you very much for releasing the code to your project!

Thank you for the information. We will use GPL with FLOSS exceptions , just like one the Trolltech (now Nokia) Qt uses. It seems to be compatible with the case of redistribution.

So that would be the LGPL, correct? That is what Nokia used when they released Qt earlier this year [1]. If so, that is great!

[1] Qt Labs Blogs Nokia to license Qt under LGPL

Just this past weekend our documentation group was lamenting the lack of an open-source WYSIWYG documentation editor. While more seasoned contributors are comfortable "with the code," this will be very helpful for people who are just starting out. Thanks again.

Cool

For openSUSE, too, all osi compliant licenses do. LGPL clearly falls into that category.

Furthermore, openSUSE build service builds single source to all of the above, i.e. fedora, ubuntu, debian and openSUSE. I'll happily lend you a hand there, let me know.
