Default Questions here or maillist? - 07-02-2009, 04:39 AM

Hi Timofey,

(1) Should we use this forum or the maillist for questions/discussions about the actual software itself? Will there be separate forums/maillists for open source versus enterprise developers?

(2) I may have missed it in your README or INSTALL files, but it might help new developers if you offered a high-level architectural description of Serna and third-party components and how they work together. For example, I had to do a number of searches to realize that the .ui files that I've seen were a product of the Qt Designer tool. I've never dealt with Qt before, so the entire Qt ecosystem was foreign to me.

(3) At some point, I'm hoping to discover the demarcation lines between the open source and enterprise versions. Once we receive the Enterprise source distribution, will an Enterprise customer be able to easily tell that they're looking at Enterprise versus Open Source Serna or will they just need to compare corresponding source files and diff them? I work for a large company that has a large legal department. It would be handy to know if I'm dabbling in an area that is OSS or not so I can direct any questions to the appropriate forum.

Anyhow, congratulations on this important milestone for Serna and all the work your team has poured into the product over the years.

John

I'd personally vote for the mailing list fo rdevelopers, and the forum for users.

There is a perfect INSTALL file right in the root dir of the serna tar ball.

1. I would prefer, as Susanne said, to use serna-developers@syntext.com mailing list for the development conversations, !!! BUT !!! after we will fix the current problems with this list (letters are till not sent from within the Syntext domain).

2. We will, of course, be developing the arch. documentation, but we are overloaded with so many tasks regarding our move to an open source. We rely on your understanding.

3. Again, we will be doing everything to make things clear. It just will take some time to do so

I guess what helps priorities is bribing aka donations. I guess they are too modest to make that possibility flashy. Anyway I think it's a fast and simple way to immediately support the open source move.

The INSTALL file definitely helped give me the clues I needed to perform searches so I could study the other open source components that are being used. Eventually, us developers should be able to reverse engineer and contribute to an architectural overview; perhaps in a wiki. Right now, it's like working on a fun 10,000-piece puzzle. The developer documentation is obviously very helpful.

I can appreciate the amount of work that's needed to get the open source effort off the ground and flying straight.

See you on the mailing list...
